Why Grief is Like a Sandwich

By Jacki Haworth, Clinical Intern

Grief can be a difficult topic to understand and grasp. Grief can look different in people. Grief is not the same for everyone, but the main theme is the same. Just because someone completes the grieving process differently does not mean that the grief you feel is any less impactful than someone else’s. This is where grief is like a sandwich.

Grief can have many different forms, like a sandwich, there are many different varieties. For example, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, there is a multitude of different types of jams and jelly.

Someone may normally eat peanut butter and strawberry jelly, but that does not mean, if someone prefers almond butter and grape jelly that that is any less of a sandwich. Just because someone grieves differently, or likes a different type of sandwich, it does not mean that their grieving process is wrong. There is no right or wrong in the grieving process.
