This Therapy Thursday is brought to you by Alan Tsang, Clinical Intern.

“Even today, I dare not say that I have reached a state of achievement. I’m still learning, for learning is boundless.” – Bruce Lee

Throughout my time here at Owens & Associates, I wouldn’t say that I have reached a peak in my educational experience. Rather, this is one of the first steps in entering a much larger world where we are constantly learning and experiencing new things. To me, this quote encompasses the idea that we are always learning, regardless of what the situation is. Learning is constant. Whether it is getting a flat on the side of the road, or sitting in a lecture hall, having learned something new is more so an accomplishment; and it is definitely something we should be proud of. A state is a temporary moment that we experience. Instead of keeping one’s focus on that one temporary moment, we think about other accomplishments we can make as we move forward.

We all take steps forward to continue our learning experiences. Some steps might have us going back to familiar places, while others might have us exploring uncharted territories in our lives. Whether the step forward takes us to some place old or new, it’s looking at it from a fresh perspective that pushes us to see and learn more. Some steps might be more uncomfortable because we know the next step is going to be difficult. But how can we know what difficult looks like without first seeing it? To be able to explore difficult areas is to come out with better knowledge not only of the experience, but of ourselves as well.

Now, it is with great honor to announce that I will be ending my internship experience at Owens & Associates. This accomplishment is just one more step in achieving my goal of being a clinical mental health counselor, yet it is also one of the biggest leaps as I jump into the field head on. During my time here, I am proud to say that I have learned from my clients (hopefully) just as much as they have from me. I have watched members of the Breakfast Club grow through the skills we have taught them, and witnessed their leadership in the group as new members are being introduced. I have also seen the growth in my individual clients as they have drawn closer to their goals.

As I begin to close out my time here at Owens, I will leave with one final quote: “If you spend too much time thinking about a thing, you’ll never get it done. Make at least one definite move daily toward your goal.” Moving backwards will happen, and there is little that we can do to control those situations sometimes. However, acknowledging that we can continue to move forward in times of hardship towards your goal, that’s more powerful than anything thrown at you. I wish nothing but the best for my Owens family. The world itself is a big place to learn from. But our individual worlds, the people we surround ourselves with, and the moves that we make, move us in the direction we want to.

To my Owens family, thank you all for your support as I end my experience here. Every member will be remembered not only as a part of my educational experience, but as a part of my world as a step out and carve out my own path. Thank you again for the wonderful time. I wish nothing but the best for all of you!
